A Drawing for a Friend

I wish I had a robot butler to bring me ice-cream whenever I needed something sugary, cool and refreshing.

Sketch Pages

It's been a while. Here are some pages from my clipboard. A lot of the stuff here is actually character exploration for a short story a read a while back, and a few of these have nothing to do with that story. Thanks for stopping by! Hope everyone is doing well!

More Jack and the Beanstalk

Early Jack personality exploration.

I've been experimenting with color lately. It's definitely one of my weaknesses. Specifically I've been experimenting with hue-shifts within different areas of my designs. While this has really pushed me out of my comfort zone, it has also, as someone helpfully pointed out to me, made my work a little muddy. I think it's most obvious in Jack's face.

In thinking about this, I've come to the conclusion that hue shifts should help to comunicate form (warm/cool relationships etc...) or subtly create interest. If the purpose is to create interest, perhaps the shifts should be more gradual so as to be interesting without becoming distracting. And that theory is subject to change too. I'm interested in hearing any other thoughts on the subject.

The Giant

I've been working on my portfolio this week and I've decided to continue on with some of the things I was doing with Jack and the Beanstalk last semester. Here's some progress.

Senora Clara

This is an iteration of my earliest sketch of the character. She didn't end up looking anything like this but I liked it enough to post. She looks like she should have some kind of tiny expensive dog... but what kind?

Estefan... but probably not

We have been doing exploration for our senior film. Here's two of my cracks at the title character.  Plus something random and silly.

Faust and Dolan

Two characters for a story I've been working on.

Jack and the Beanstalk Characters

Here is my first color pass on these Jack and the Beanstalk characters for my concept design class. Even though these are not the finished designs, I was happy enough with this pass to post them. The finished ones will be due a little later on in the term.

From the left we have the Giant, his cook, Yanana the harp playing slave, and Jack. Jack is the type of kid who has porridge every morning and still thinks it's "the greatest thing in the whole wide world!" I was also thinking it would be funny if he were initially completely oblivious to the dangers around him.

The Witch

A friend of mine told me that I don't post often enough. I generally like to do so once every two weeks, but maybe I'll try once or twice a week and see who gets sick of it. This is an old sketch, one of many witch designs I worked on for a personal project. I still like her hair.

Stefan!

Here is a character concept for one of my friend's projects. Stefan is quite possibly the greatest hairdresser in the world.

Public Bawler

I did this for Joe Olson's drawing class. The topic was "Pretty Awkward." I think loud, hysterical public bawling qualifies. I really wish I would have had time to hint at a crowd of people. In an earlier sketch I had a group of kids sitting on the bench next to her leaning away with one of them offering her a sucker. Another idea was to have her leaning on some total stranger. I might do a redraw over the next few months.

Gardner

I'm hoping to post some process drawings leading up to this one when I get a little more time.

Ape Redesign Process and Final

This was the midterm for Joe Olson's Drawing for Animation class. There were several requirements, some of which you can find written on one of these images.

My friend Anthony Holden made the comment that the final design looks more like an inflatable beach toy than an urban vinyl toy. I agree with him, and now can see almost nothing else when I look at the design. I'm still happy with the over-all results/process.

From the Craggy Peaks of Oppenlander

So this is for my Drawing For Animation class with Joe Olson. The assignment was to create a "Beast of Burden from the Craggy Peaks of Oppenlander." The drawing has some issues... but I'm posting it anyway.

Final Dump

So here's how finals went this semester. I was totally swamped (aren't we all) and didn't really get any of these looking the way I'd intended... on the bright side though, it is done!

The first post is my 3d final... it's silly but it wasn't easy to do...

The next 3 are for my character design class. I'm fleshing out a story that I would like to make into a film some day. I think the designs still need a little work (especially the villain design).

Emulation

For Ryan Woodward's character design class we had to emulate a different artist. We were supposed to pick someone who had a different style than the one we were used to working in.
I chose Sean Galloway who is a character designer and comic book artist. I feel like it was at least fairly successful.

Walter...

Walter is an evil mastermind who's super power is the ability to bring the things he imagines to life. He can influence how events unfold, and with some effort, he can conjure up terrifying creatures and loyal evil henchmen to aid him in his diabolical plans. Walter is also in 5th grade. Most of his teachers think he's very sweet. little do they know...
